Destination Overview

For nearly three decades Turneffe Flats, 30 miles off the coast of Belize, has been known as one of the Caribbean's finest saltwater fly fishing destinations. The superior lodge facilities, the fine boats and equipment, to the superior quality rooms make this the best saltwater lodge you will find.

The diversity of the area's fishing sets Turneffe Flats apart from other destinations, and the opportunity to catch bonefish, permit and tarpon on a given day makes this one of the rare spots to pursue a "Flats Grand Slam".

The lodge whisks you from Belize City on their spacious 48’ boat and makes a scenic 90 minute crossing where you may see dolphins, manatees, varied bird species as you weave through case  and mangroves to your isolated luxury destination with every amenity!

Located on Turneffe Atoll, the lodge offers all-inclusive fly fishing vacations emphasizing world-class bonefishing, great permit fishing, and tarpon fishing and superior personalized service for a small group of guests at a private island paradise.  They are also experts in diving and many guests take advantage of both diving and great fly fishing.

Fishing Program

You will rise early, have a great breakfast and met your guide at the dock. The guide will have your lunch and chosen drinks and be ready for a day on the water. The fishing schedule is as flexible as possible. A typical day's fishing is about 8 hours. Generally the fishing day begins after breakfast and ends around 5 pm, although may be adjusted depending on the tides and other factors.

You will return by 5 pm and have a few hours to relax, take a swim or fish the home flat before dinner.

Bonefishing

Bonefishing has been the mainstay of Turneffe Flats Lodge's fishing for decades with Turneffe Atoll's miles of crystal clear, wadeable flats. While wading Turneffe's extensive turtle grass flats, many just 5 to 15 minutes away, you will sight-fish to large schools of bonefish as well as smaller groups and singles. Bonefishing remains consistently good throughout the year.

Permit Fishing

Increasing numbers of saltwater anglers have developed a serious interest in permit fishing. Turneffe Flats is one of a select group of saltwater destinations where you can regularly experience the excitement of flats fishing for tailing permit. Good permit fishing is available throughout the year and you will see tailing fish and have opportunities at fish from 10 to 20 lbs. and an occasional shot at a much larger permit. For the hardcore angler, you can even fish the home flat for tailing permit before dinner, or rise at first light to chase the permit that visit the water in front of your accommodations.

Tarpon Fishing

Because tarpon are migratory, they are, by nature, seasonal. Although some tarpon are around throughout the year, the prime season generally begins in mid-to-late April and continues to mid-October with June, July and August generally being the prime best months. Most of the migratory tarpon are in the 70-90 pound range, but some 150-200 pound monsters are seen each year.

Other Activities

The atolls of Belize are consistently rated amongst the world's best dive destinations. With pristine coral reefs, abundant marine life and warm Caribbean seas, it's easy to see why.

Turneffe Flats is ideally located to take advantage of Belize's best diving, and three dives per day including a weekly night dive are standard for the lodge. The lodge is ideally located with access to Lighthouse Reef Atoll and the famous Blue Hole. Weather permitting; TFL's weekly dive package includes a trip to Lighthouse to dive the Blue Hole, Half Moon Wall and Long Caye.

Small dive groups are the norm (6 to 12 divers) with the excellent Instructors and Dive Masters emphasizing personalized service and maximum flexibility. PADI Dive Instruction is available on-site and a wide range of courses are offered, including Discover SCUBA Diving, Open Water Referral, Advanced SCUBA Diver Certification and various Specialty Courses.

Because there are so many wonderful things to see and do at Turneffe, a diversified marine ecotourism vacation was developed combining the nearby world-class snorkeling with several other daily activities. This package is called the "Atoll Adventure". Incredible snorkeling is a mainstay of this package with a wide variety of snorkeling choices.

Observe manatees and dolphins in their natural habitats or look for more than 60 bird species identified at Turneffe. This unique program is exciting, educational and fun. Learn the fascinating history of the Turneffe Atoll beginning with the Maya, who fished and traded on the Turneffe Atoll as far back as 400 A.D., to the Pirates of the Caribbean who used Turneffe as a favored hideout. Join a Belizean cooking class or just relax in a hammock under the coconut palms.
