RIO INDIO LODGE

Destination Overview
The brand new Rio Indio Lodge offers the ultimate in world class luxury away from the crowded Central American fishing resorts. Over 6 million dollars were spent to create the luxury Rio Indio Lodge located on the edge of Nicaragua’s rainforest on the Caribbean coast of Central America. It sits in the middle of Rio Maiz National Park which was created by the Nicaraguan government to protect the pristine environment of its coast. Recognizing that eco-tourism - which includes fly fishing, is an important sector of today’s travel industry, the government is doing everything it can to protect one of its national treasures.
The main building has been hand crafted by local artisans who used indigenous wood to create the lodges beams and furniture. The main building is furnished with comfortable furniture and includes a gourmet restaurant and one of the two onsite bars. Tarpon, Snook, Snapper and Rainbow Bass fishing in addition to birding and jungle tours are available during your stay. We at Kiene's Fly Fishing Travel feel that the combination of its remoteness, luxurious facilities, terrific fishing and its activities for eco-tourists make it one of the most enticing resorts on the Caribbean coast. The lodge welcomes families too.

Fishing Program
The Rio Indio Fly Fishing Lodge is located in a region of Costa Rica & Nicaragua at the ideal location for fishing both Costa Rica and Nicaragagua. Rio Indio Lodge offers the best Tarpon fly fishing, Snook fishing, Rainbow Bass fishing, and Machaca fishing.
The season is year-round and in the span of five days, you can fish a combination of ocean, river, and lagoon. The water in the rivers, lakes, and lagoons are generally "black water," generated by tannic acid, but clear. Tarpon can weigh up to 150 pounds. Snook are taken casting in the rivers, trolling and at times fly casting against the deadfall. Mojara is a super size bream that may weigh as much as 2-1/2 pounds. The average is about 1 pound. Machaca is a fish resembling a freshwater shad with fierce some teeth that will chew the toughest leaders; however, it is a great fighter. It is a drab silver in color and can range up to 5 lbs. The Rainbow Bass, a species native to Costa Rica, is among the toughest of all the freshwater fish.
You will be fishing out of 16 foot pangas (very stable flat bottom boats) with your guide and one other fisherman. 20 footers are also available for fishing bigger water. During your five days you will fish almost all of the water types nearby that include ocean, river, and lagoons. The guides are bilingual Rama Indians who are great naturalist and observers and after centuries of living in the Rain Forest.
Best Fly Fishing Seasons
September-October/February-March-April, Tarpon and common Snook are plentiful. November-December-January, fat Snook and some Tarpon are common.
February-March-April-May, Rainbow Bass, Majara and Mochaca are bountiful.
