Fly Fishing in Belize
Should You Try Fly Fishing in Belize?
A variety of lodge types await you if you go fly fishing in Belize. Choose from a smaller, cabin-like operation near a beach; another small operator in a more forested area, or a larger lodge surrounded by palms. All focus on ocean fish like bonefish, tarpon, and permit, but some also offer the chance to get snook, snapper, and jack.
Notably, Belize was first settled by English pirates who wanted a good base from which to attack Spanish merchant ships. This caused Spain to decide to just take the whole place over, and they kept it until Britain gained control in 1836. At that time, it was called British Honduras – a name that stuck until the country gained independence in 1981.
In 2009, the government of Belize recognized that overfishing could crash its big fly fishing-driven tourism industry. Therefore, it has one of the most stringent catch-and-release laws on the planet.
