Fishing Program

A typical day at Casa Blanca starts at 6 AM with a delicious breakfast. Don’t worry if you forget to set the clock as the lodge dining schedule is flexible.  Coffee is ready at 5AM in the main lodge or can be delivered to your room, if desired.  You will then make your way down to the dock and meet your guide, then hop into one of the skiffs and off you go for an amazing day of fishing.  Being that the lodge sits right in the middle of some of the most productive waters, travel time is minimal allowing for more time on the water.

In late afternoon you will then return to the lodge to relax around the pool, or if you prefer, have a massage.  Appetizers and drinks will be served and there will be plenty of time to converse with other guests about the day’s adventures.

Ascension Bay is one of the best places in the world to achieve a Grand Slam.  The bay is teeming with all flats species all year round.  From rivers, lagoons, and classic sand flats, there are endless possibilities to wade or fish from the boat.

Bonefish are plentiful in Ascension Bay and though the bay has been famous for years for its huge populations of small Bonefish, in recent years the size of the fish have gradually increased.  The reason is probably due to the lodge’s strict conservation policies which of course include strictly catch & release fishing.

Permit Fishing is arguably the best in the world due possibly to the bay’s proximity to the protected Sian Ka’an Biosphere Preserve.  Permit are the fish that will most test your skill as they are constantly moving so accurate casts are necessary to hook these rockets.  Your guide will be your extra set of eyes and will expertly coach you to make perfect casts to place the fly in the feeding lane of the fish.

The king of the flats are Tarpon which are the largest and most acrobatic fish on the flats.  Casa Blanca is know for fish in the 20 to 70 lb range, but in April Migratory fish that weight as much as 150 lbs make their appearance and increase in numbers into July.

Snook are found in the back waters and among the mangroves.  They can be a challenge but once you hook one you will be amazed at their explosive power.  Fall is the most productive season.

Best Fly Fishing Seasons

Fall-October through November

Weather is iffy but is made up for by the fact that angling pressure is light and the fishing remains excellent.

Winter-December through February

Great weather sometimes punctuated by a cold front and low humidity and light angling pressure.  Fishing remains excellent.

Spring-March through April

Weather stabilizes and temperatures are moderate though winds begin to become a factor.  Warming water makes the fish more active.

Summer-June through August

These are the hottest and rainiest months though with the warmest water of the year, the fish are at their most active.  Lodge is generally closed during this period, though parties of 6 or more will be welcome.

Accommodations

The lodge is built on the water overlooking a beautiful flat visited daily by Bonefish schools, Permit and Tarpon.  A short walk down the lodge’s lighted pier in the evening can get you into some of the best fishing of your visit.  All rooms are air conditioned, spacious and tastefully furnished with amazing ocean views, and air conditioning.  Casa Blanca has ten seaside rooms and can accommodate 20 guests comfortably.

Within the main lodge is a lounging with comfortable chairs and a fully stocked bar attended by a bartender.  There you can discuss the day’s adventures with other guests enjoying excellent snacks.  After a shower you will proceed to the dining room to enjoy the chef’s daily specialty.  The chef specializes in seafood enhanced with local seasonings.
