Destination Overview

A favorite destination for Kiene's Fly Fishing Travel staff, Belize River Lodge is for the angler who desires a memorable fishing experience in an easy to navigate environment, Belize is the perfect destination.

Belize is tucked just under the Yucatan Peninsula and has 240 miles of shoreline that consists of estuaries’, flats, and barrier reefs, and has become one of the most visited saltwater fly fishing destinations in the world.  It’s home to one of the most diverse collections of game fish that range from Bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, snapper, jacks, barracuda and numerous other species.

This small Central American country, was first settled by a group of English pirates called “Baymen” who established a base in 1638 from where they could organize attacks on Spanish treasure ships until eventually coming under Spanish rule.  In 1836 the British took over and abolished slavery and named the country British Honduras which remained its name until its independence in 1981, when it was renamed Belize.

In 2009, recognizing the importance of Belize as a destination fishery the Belizian government passed one of the most stringent set of catch and release regulations in the world to ensure that its populations of Bonefish, Tarpon and Permit will continue to flourish.   Our staff at Kiene's Fly Fishing Travel has spent over 25 years traveling and fishing the waters of Belize and are intimately familiar with all of the lodges. We have selected only the best lodges to assure that you  have a memorable experience and Belize River Lodge is one of the finest.

The Belize River Lodge operates two venues; the original Belize River Lodge and the Long Caye Outpost Lodge located in central Belize. The Belize River Lodge is the Kiene's Fly Fishing Travel favorite as it is the oldest continually operated fishing lodge in Belize making it legendary in the saltwater fishing community.  Originally founded in 1960 as Barothy’s Caribbean Lodge, it was the vanguard of what now has become a relatively important component in the economy of this small country.

The original Belize River Lodge venue is located on the banks of the Old Belize River and it’s known for its variety of water that varies from river backwaters and mangrove cays to vast saltwater flats. The lodge is known for Permit, abundant Bonefish and as one of the best Tarpon fisheries in Belize.  It’s not unusual to see Iguana Lizards resting on tree branches and hear the exotic  sounds of Howler Monkeys off in the distance.  Plenty of non angling activities such as, snorkeling, scuba diving, bird watching and guided trips to Maya ruins are available.

The Long Caye Outpost Lodge (acquired in 2011) sits in front of Long Caye overlooking Belize’s barrier reef and offers spectacular views of the sparkling blue green waters of the Caribbean and is less than a ten minute boat ride from St. Georges Caye, Miami Beach and about twenty minutes from Caye Caulker. The Long Caye Outpost Lodge resort provides the perfect get-away from it all vacation. If you have fished in the area before, or if you know the area, you know that Long Caye is one of the best fishing areas in Belize with a wide variety of species available that include, Tarpon, Snook, Bonefish, Permit plus Tripletail, Ladyfish, jacks, Barracuda and others.

Fishing Program For Both Lodges

Because of the large variety of water accessible from the lodge, the Belize River Lodge can get you into fish no matter what type of weather condition occurs during your visit.  Almost all fishing is done from skiffs with two fishermen to a boat that rotate either by caught fish, casts or time.

Normally one angler gets to fish to the pod of fish until he or she either catches one or spooks them and then the next person gets the next group. The guides make sure that both fishermen in their boat get equal time over the course of the day.

The Fish

Below is a list of the most popular fish species.

Bonefish: One of the most plentiful fish in the area, they are considered one of the most powerful fish pound for pound, and their average size ranges from 2 to 4 lbs though even larger fish are caught throughout the year.

Tarpon: Excellent fishing for this king of saltwater game fish is available in the area year round. The fish typically range from 5 to 80 lbs and some get up to 200 lbs in size. The larger Tarpon are caught during their migration from March through July and again from September through November though monster fish can be caught anytime of the year.

Permit: The best time to fish for these piscatorial rockets is when there is less wind, usually the months between April and September. Permit fly fishing is very weather dependent and any day of the year can be good permit weather.

Snook: Snook ranging from 5 to 25 lbs can be found in the lagoons and rivers near the lodge year round.
